Tips

  1. Always clear the lowest word first: every word falls at the same speed, so the one nearest the shield is the one that lands next.

  2. Accuracy beats raw speed. One wrong letter resets your multiplier, and letters typed at ×5 are worth five times as much as letters at ×1.

  3. Read the first letters before you type. No two words on screen share a first letter, so one keystroke is all it takes to pick your target; on the on-screen keyboard the next key you need glows cyan.

  4. If you have locked onto a long word and a short one is about to land, press Backspace, clear the short one, then come back.

  5. Long words are worth far more than short ones: the word bonus grows with the square of the length, 45 points for three letters and 320 for eight.

  6. Do not panic after a hit. The shield's discharge vaporises the words next to the one that landed, which gives you a few seconds to catch up.

About Type Storm

Type Storm is a free online typing game where your keyboard is the only weapon between a neon city and a storm of falling words. Words drop out of the clouds and slide toward the city's shield; type a word and the turret on the central tower fires a laser for every correct letter until the word explodes. It plays like an arcade shooter and works like typing practice: familiar words, real speed, and your live words per minute and accuracy on screen the whole time. It sits among our word games and is the first of our typing games.

A run lasts at most 100 seconds. The first letter you type locks onto the word that starts with it, and no two words on screen ever share a first letter, so a single key picks your target. The next letters must continue that word: a wrong letter is a miss, and Backspace (or Enter) drops the target if a more urgent word appears. The storm comes in seven waves: words arrive in volleys of two to five, grow from three letters to eight, and fall twice as fast by the end. A word that reaches the shield costs one of your three lives, and the shield's discharge wipes out the words right next to it, so a hit gives you a moment to recover.

Scoring rewards clean, fast typing. Every correct letter is worth 10 points times your combo multiplier, which climbs from ×1 to ×5 after 10, 25, 45 and 70 correct letters in a row and resets on any mistake or city hit. Each word you destroy adds a bonus of five times its length squared, so an eight-letter word is worth 320 on its own, and surviving all seven waves pays 1,000 points for every life you still have. Free play is unlimited, and a Ranked attempt puts one run on the all-time and weekly leaderboards once our servers have replayed your keystrokes and verified it.

On a laptop or desktop you just type: letters on a physical keyboard reach the game instantly, and the on-screen keyboard under the city lights up as you play, with the next key you need glowing cyan. On a phone or tablet, hold it sideways and tap the same on-screen keys; they are exactly the keys the game reads, so touch typing and physical typing play by the same rules. Type Storm is one of our keyboard games and fits nicely into a short break next to the other quick games.

Why it works as fun typing practice: the words are common English words rather than random letters, the pressure ramps up smoothly from a gentle first wave to a real storm, and the combo meter makes accuracy just as important as raw speed. Beginners can learn the lock-on rhythm in the first ten seconds, while fast typists chase a flawless ×5 streak and the storm-survived bonus. Type Storm FAQ

  • How long does a game of Type Storm last?

At most 100 seconds: a 98-second storm in seven waves followed by a short finale. Losing all three lives ends the run sooner.

  • How is the score calculated?

Each correct letter scores 10 points times your combo multiplier (×2 after 10 correct letters in a row, ×3 after 25, ×4 after 45 and ×5 after 70). Each destroyed word adds 5 × its length squared, and surviving the storm adds 1,000 points per life left. A wrong letter or a word hitting the city resets the multiplier.

  • Can I play Type Storm on my phone?

Yes. Hold your phone sideways and tap the on-screen keyboard under the city. A physical keyboard is faster, so the game is at its best on a laptop, a desktop or a tablet with a keyboard.

  • What happens when I type a wrong letter?

It counts as a miss: your combo resets to ×1, but the lock stays on your word, so just type the correct letter next. A letter that no word starts with is also a miss. Backspace or Enter drops the target without any penalty.

  • Is Type Storm good typing practice?

It practises typing familiar English words quickly and accurately under time pressure, and it shows your words per minute and accuracy live, so you can compare runs. It is a game rather than a typing course, and it makes a quick, fun warm-up before a longer typing session.

  • How is WPM measured?

Words per minute counts five correctly typed letters as one word, divided by the minutes you have played so far. Wrong letters do not count toward it; they lower your accuracy instead.
