Tips

  1. Look for common word endings and beginnings first: -ER, -ED, -ES, -LY, RE- and UN- often unlock the long words, including the seven-letter one.

  2. Grow words in families: once you have a short word, try adding one letter at a time (ARE, EAR, EARN, NEAR, LEARN) to find the next length up.

  3. Use the board as a checklist. The empty slots show how many familiar words of each length are left, so you know when a six-letter word is still hiding.

  4. Only submit words you are sure of. A made-up word resets your streak to ×1.0, while an already-found word or a word that is too short costs nothing.

  5. Shuffle early and often. A new letter order breaks the patterns your eyes are stuck on, and a shuffle never costs time or points.

  6. The seven-letter word is worth 3,000 points, up to 4,500 with a full streak. That is more than a dozen three-letter words, so give it a real try in the middle of the round.

About Anagram Blitz

Anagram Blitz is a fast, free anagram game you play in your browser. You get seven scrambled letters and 90 seconds to make as many words from them as you can: three-letter words, four-letter words, and all the way up to the one word that uses every letter. If you like word unscramble games, word jumbles or the classic newspaper anagram puzzle, this is the version with a clock, a streak and a leaderboard.

A round is simple. Build a word from the letters in the rack and press Enter. Real words of three to seven letters are accepted, and each one can only be scored once. The word board above the rack has an empty slot for every familiar word hidden in your letters, sorted by length, so you can see at a glance that there is still a five-letter word waiting to be found. When your eyes stop finding new words, shuffle the rack: seeing the same letters in a new order is often all it takes. Every rack is chosen so that it contains exactly one seven-letter word, and a gold row reminds you it is there.

Longer words are worth much more: 100 points for three letters, 250 for four, 500 for five, 900 for six and 3,000 for the seven-letter word. Every real word in a row builds your streak, which adds 10% per word up to +50%, so a clean run of good words pays off. Guessing is risky, though: a made-up word resets the streak to zero. When the clock stops, the board flips over the familiar words you missed, which makes every round a small vocabulary lesson. Scrabble fans will be happy to hear that obscure but valid words count too; they appear as bonus words.

Anagram Blitz plays just as well on a phone as on a computer. On a touchscreen, tap the letter tiles to build a word and use the MIX, CLEAR, backspace and ENTER buttons. On a desktop, just type: every key moves a matching tile into your word instantly, Enter submits, Backspace takes a letter back, Space shuffles and Esc clears. It is one of our keyboard games that never needs a mouse.

Each round lasts 90 seconds, which makes Anagram Blitz one of the quick games you can fit into any break, and a good daily workout from our brain games. Play free rounds as often as you like, then press Ranked attempt when you are ready to put a score on the leaderboard; every ranked run is replayed on our servers before it counts. Anagram Blitz FAQ

  • How long does a game of Anagram Blitz last?

Each round lasts 90 seconds, followed by a few seconds that show the words you missed. A round also ends early if you do nothing at all for 30 seconds.

  • How is the score calculated?

Words score by length: 100 points for 3 letters, 250 for 4, 500 for 5, 900 for 6 and 3,000 for the 7-letter word. Your streak of real words in a row adds 10% per word, up to +50%. A made-up word resets the streak.

  • Is there always a seven-letter word?

Yes. Every rack is built from a familiar seven-letter word and contains exactly one word that uses all seven letters. The gold row on the board fills in when you find it.

  • Which words are accepted?

Any standard English word of three to seven letters that can be made from the rack, including plurals and verb forms. Proper nouns, abbreviations and offensive words are not accepted. Rare but valid dictionary words count as bonus words.

  • Can I play Anagram Blitz on my phone?

Yes. Tap the letter tiles to build words and use the on-screen buttons to shuffle, clear and submit. On a computer you can type every word on your keyboard instead.

  • Is every round equally hard?

Yes, as far as possible. Racks are only chosen from a range with a similar number of familiar words, so a ranked score depends on your skill, not on a lucky set of letters.
