How to play Letter Grid

  1. Look over the 4×4 grid of letters and spot a word of three or more letters.

  2. Press on its first letter and drag through the next letters; each one must touch the previous tile, diagonals included.

  3. Release to submit the word (on a keyboard, type it and press Enter instead).

  4. Drag back onto the previous tile to undo a letter; each tile can be used only once per word.

  5. Find as many different words as you can in 90 seconds; longer words and quick streaks score the most.

Tips

  1. Hunt for common endings and add-ons: once you find a word, check whether an S, an ED or an ER touches its last tile.

  2. Look for long words around the vowels in the middle of the grid; a centre tile touches eight others, so most long words run through it.

  3. Take the easy three- and four-letter words fast to build a streak, then spend the calmer moments on five- and six-letter words, which score far more.

  4. Avoid guessing when a streak is running: a made-up word resets it, while taking a second to be sure keeps the bonus going.

  5. Read the missed words at the end of each round; the same letter patterns come back, and spotting them is how scores climb.

About Letter Grid

Letter Grid is a free word grid game you play right in your browser. Sixteen letter tiles sit in a 4×4 square, and your job is to find words in the letters before the 90-second clock runs out. Press on a letter, drag through the letters touching it (up, down, sideways or diagonally) and let go to submit the word. If you enjoy classic Boggle-style word hunts, this is that kind of game in a fast, modern format that fits in a coffee break, and it works just as well on a phone as on a computer.

Every round deals a new grid, and every grid hides dozens of familiar words. Words need at least three letters, each tile can be used only once in the same word, and a word counts once, however many ways you can trace it. The first minute usually goes to quick three- and four-letter words; the real points are in the long ones. A five-letter word is worth four times a three-letter word, and a seven-letter word is worth twelve of them, so the best players keep scanning the same sixteen letters for one more big find. When the time is up you see how many words you found, your best word and a few familiar words you missed, so every round teaches you something for the next.

Scoring is simple and rewards skill. Words earn 100, 200, 400, 700 or 1,200 points for three to seven letters, and finding words in quick succession builds a streak: each word within six seconds of the last one adds a streak bonus of up to +200. A made-up word or a word you already found breaks the streak, so speed only pays when you are sure. Grids are generated to be equally rich for everyone, which keeps the leaderboards fair: press Ranked attempt when you want a run to count, and your score is verified by replaying your moves on our servers, like every game in our competitive games.

On a phone, trace words with your finger: the tiles are big, the path lights up as you go, and a drag only enters a tile near its centre, so diagonal moves never pick up the wrong neighbour. Drag back one tile to undo a letter. On a desktop you can drag with the mouse or simply type the word and press Enter; the grid highlights the path it found for your letters, which makes Letter Grid one of our favourite keyboard games for fast typists.

Letter Grid sits alongside the other word games on Gamefinity, and it is a natural pick if you like word grid games, fun word games or a short daily workout from the brain games page. Rounds last about a minute and a half, so it also belongs with our quick games: play one round, check the words you missed, and try to beat your best word next time.

Letter Grid FAQ

  • How long does a game of Letter Grid last?

Each round is 90 seconds of play followed by a short summary of your words, so a full game takes about a minute and a half.

  • How is the score calculated?

Each new word scores by its length: 100 points for three letters, 200 for four, 400 for five, 700 for six and 1,200 for seven. Words found within six seconds of the previous one add a streak bonus of 50 per step, up to +200.

  • Which words are allowed?

Any English word of three to seven letters from a standard word-game dictionary, with each letter on a tile touching the previous one and no tile used twice. Proper nouns and offensive words are not accepted, and each word counts once.

  • Is Letter Grid the same as Boggle?

No. Letter Grid is an original Gamefinity game in the classic find-words-in-a-grid style and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the makers of Boggle. It has its own scoring, streaks and a 90-second clock.

  • Can I play Letter Grid on my phone?

Yes. It is built for touch: drag your finger across the tiles to trace words. On a computer you can drag with the mouse or type words on your keyboard.
